Faith

My Faith is what fuels my daily living; it’s the difference maker in Life! During my college years, I came to understand that I was trusting in myself more than I trusted in God. How was it that I could live my life for almost 20 years without knowing the truth? I honestly thought that if I loved God and followed the Ten Commandments by being a good person and doing the right things, that I was set.
This is why I am so passionate about making sure every person I know hears the Good News of the Gospel Message. So here’s the truth…We all sin and fall short of the Glory of God. That’s a tough fact to swallow isn’t it, especially when we’re working so hard to be a good person? But here’s the Good News, Jesus Christ died on the Cross for my sins and yours, so the we could have an abundant life here and spend eternity with Him in Heaven someday.
The past 20 plus years, I have focused my time and energy in seeking to walk faithfully with God. He continues to mold and shape me to be more like Him, but there is still so much to grasp and unpack. That’s why I thought it would be kind of cool to share my thoughts here on the Blog in an effort to document my adventures with God – the miracles, the tough stuff, and the in between.

“I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on your laws.” – Psalm 119:30

Why I left my safe and comfortable to step out in Faith!

It’s been a while since I posted up a blog. I have missed my time-spent writing and reflecting about all that God is doing in my life and sharing the things He has been teaching me with you. The past several months I have taken some unexpected journeys. With every season, life brings on change. There are all things new…beginnings, relationships, and adventures and then some things die away…the leaves change colors and then start to fall off the trees or maybe what was once your normal vanishes right before your very eyes. You take the good with the bad, the bitter with the sweet and when you put it all together you end up leaning into God a little more knowing that He is the giver of it all, the redeemer of that which seems lost, the comforter when life deals its blows.

Follow God's Will

Have you ever thought you had a clear vision for where God was taking you, only to end up in a completely different place than you ever expected? I am wondering if like me, you long to have a roadmap for how you are supposed to navigate these times in your life? You can allow times like these to help you grow closer to God, to seek Him in all things. His Word (The Bible) guides your steps, and you listen and look around to see what He is up to in this new season of your life.

For quite a long time now, I have been crying out to God in prayer about several specific things that have needed resolution in my life. I have claimed scriptures and believed in God’s promises.

  • “For truly, I say to you if you have faith like a grain of mustard see, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17: 20 (ESV)
  • “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” Matthew 21:22
  • “All things are possible for one who believes.” – Mark 9:23 (ESV)
  • “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (ESV)
  • “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurable more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us…” – Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)

God Opens a Window

I have waited patiently for answers to prayers. I have watched others get answers to their prayers quickly. I just haven’t been on the receiving end of the quickly answered prayers all that often. It came as quite a surprise to me when I recently asked God to provide in a couple of very specific areas of my life if it was His will. I was left in shock and awe to see him move so very quickly in an area of my life that appeared to be in the center of His will. Why would He move me when I was making a positive difference for Him? It was so confusing that He would tee up a set of circumstances that would cause me to sit up and question whether I really was where He wanted me to be. My recent experience has taught me that just because something seems right to me, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s right where God wants me to be.

These are the deeper waters of faith, stepping out in faith to follow God when you don’t know why He is asking you to leave a place where you are making a positive impact for Him. As I journeyed this road, God brought several scriptures to mind that led me to believe that I was supposed to leave my familiar to follow his lead to the unknown.

  • “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:38 (Ouch, that one hurts when you like to know where you are headed and why you are headed there.)
  • “My sheep listen to my voice: I know them and they follow me.” – John 10: 27 (NIV) (I had to let the voice of God resonate louder than the voices and varied opinions.)
  • “ And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19 (ESV)
  • “Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “ I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8: 12 (ESV) (I’m not going to lie to you on this one, at times I have felt like I’m stepping into the dark, but I learned on this one that when he is asking me to move forward, He will light the path as I walk forward in faith.)

Follow me and I will make you fishers of men

So I did it, I prayed, I listened to God speak in His Word, through His people, and through a bunch of circumstances that only He could have orchestrated. I just took a huge leap of faith and I am not yet sure how it’s all going to turn out. I do know that when God asks me to follow Him, there’s probably a good reason. I am confident that in time those things will be brought to light and even if I don’t know this side of Heaven, I do know that I will be able to say that I followed God as He opened a new door in my life. I am just following Him like the disciples did long ago. When Jesus asked them to follow him, they did it even when they didn’t know why or how they would be able to do the things he was asking them to do.

My head is spinning and I’m still trying to play catch up with all that has happened in the past several months. I definitely learned that when you go to God in prayer and ask Him to provide, you can’t complain about how He choses to answer. You just have to follow His leading!

How Do I Know I’m following Christ on the Right Path?

How Do I Know I’m following Christ on the Right Path? This is the question we ask ourselves at times along the journey. It’s a valid question that begs an answer because sometimes things happen that make us wonder whether we’re still in the center of God’s will. That’s where we want to be, that’s where there is peace and clarity in why we’re traveling a specific road at this season in life.

Center of GodSo here’s the deal, I can discover whether I am on the right path with Christ by understanding that God speaks to me in four different ways. One on the most life-changing studies in my Christian walk was a Bible Study by Henry Blackaby entitled, “Experiencing God – Knowing and doing the will of God.” In this study, I learned that God can speak to me through His Word, Prayer, Circumstances, and His people.   If you’re wondering whether you are following Christ on the right path, you can evaluate these four key areas to uncover whether you’re still in the center of God’s will.

Experiencing God's WordThe first place to take a look is in God’s word the Bible. What does God have to say about the particular road you are walking? What are the truths that He needs to speak into your life right now? When you stay in the Word, God has an opportunity to whisper little words of wisdom into your heart. I often find that when I journal a scripture that jumps out at me, there tends to be a repeating pattern; so it helps to take time to write my thoughts down.

The second opportunity for God to speak is when you are praying. I have grown in my prayer life over the years. When I started praying, I was just giving God a list of the things I wanted Him to fix. Now I pray BIG Prayers that are beyond my wildest dreams; I ask God for His will to be done and for Him to show and guide me in the way He wants me to go. I even sit quietly for a period of time while I am praying. While I have never heard an audible voice, I have had a thought come to my mind that seemed to be a God inspired idea or solution.

God uses circumstancesThe third way God speaks to us in through our circumstances. I am convinced that there are no coincidences; everything happens for a reason. God uses our circumstances to push us outside of our comfort zones, to sit up and take note, or to teach us something He wants us to learn. I know personally that I really like knowing what to expect and that I really like to feel safe. When we get too confident in doing things in our own strength, God may choose to move us beyond what we would normally do, so that He can grow us and mold our hearts to be more like Him.

The fourth way that God uses to speak to us is His people. There are people in your life and in mine that are life givers; they speak the truth in love. They can give us some Godly wisdom in situations where we are emotionally charged up. There have been times in my life when someone that I admire and look up to has shared their thoughts with me regarding a particular situation. After I hear their wise counsel, I have a peace knowing that God was speaking through that person, so that I could audibly hear the truth in the matter that He wants me to grasp.

I love this truth in God’s word that we can ultimately stand on when we are asking the question, “Lord, am I on the right path, in the center of your will?”  It’s found in Isaiah 30:21, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (NIV Version)  God promises to guide our steps so that we can peacefully travel along the path that He has us walking!

Navigating the less than “Yes” answer to your Prayers

What happens when your prayers don’t yield the result you were hoping for in life? I mean you took the matter to the Lord and it was the desire of your heart that He would provide a different answer than you got. It sure is easy to stay on the faith wagon when God is opening doors and answering your prayers, but how do we navigate the less than “Yes” answer to prayers?

I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but it’s happened to me. I have prayed for healing and it hasn’t come, I have prayed that God would release us from a financial burden, but it hasn’t lifted. I could go on and on with the list, but I will spare you the details because it starts to sound like I’m having a pity party and that’s not the attitude I want to entertain.  If I am really honest about my less than “Yes” answers to prayer, I can see the hand of God in these circumstances. He has been faithful to bring the right people and resources to help me move forward in faith in spite of the challenges that I am facing. That’s just how He rolls, “He works all things together for good.”

God answers in 3 ways

When it seems like God is saying “NO,” literally slamming the door shut in your face, we have a choice to make. We can doubt God or we can trust Him. We can get bitter about it or we can trust that God has something better. God typically has three answers to our prayers. He says “Yes” and gives us the desire of our heart. He says “No” and gives us something better or He says “Not yet” and gives us something even better yet. I am learning that when the answer isn’t yes, it’s still going to be good. In fact, in may be even better than I could have asked for or imagined.   The truth of the matter is God works behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it or feel it. When life is looking bleak, God is still working to answer our prayers. He may not answer them in the way that we would expect or on the timetable we had planned, but God is faithful. What is supposed to happen will come to pass! Believe it, Claim it, and stand strong while you wait on Him to show up in a way that you will know that only He could have pulled it off!

It will happen

So today, if you are navigating a less than “Yes” answer to a prayer that is near and dear to your heart, remember that God has got it all under control. He knows what needs to happen and when it needs to happen to fulfill His plans and purposes for your life and the lives of the people you touch. Choose to trust that God knows what is BEST, even better than we could know for ourselves.

God is making things happen
